Day TWO : Welily and ElShorbagy through to semis
Groups Day Two :
It was the second of Four days of Group Matches tonight at the Mall of Arabia, starting with the two remaining Round One matches, then the first half of Round Two.
Welily and ElShorbagy qualify
The evening started with hard fought wins for Nour El Tayeb and Karim Abdel Gawad to conclude the first round matches.
In the second round matches there were semi-final places on offer. Raneem El Welily knew a 2-0 win would see her through, but she had to come from a game down to beat Camille Serme, leaving qualification in the balance, but Tesni Evans‘ later win over Joelle King ensured that Welily would qualify from Group A.
Diego Elias also came from a game down to record his first ever win over Simon Rosner and keep his hopes alive, while Mohamed ElShorbagy and Tarek Momen both knew that a 2-0 win would see them through. In the event, ElShorbagy’s 2-1 win, another after-midnight finish, was enough to ensure the defending champion will appear in the semis.
The Serme v Evans and Momen v Elias v Momen matches will decide who also qualifies. King and Rosner now can’t make the semis, but they can still have an influence on the order of the top two.
